This collection is one of the Seattle Art Museum Libraries' hidden collections. Rather than a standalone bookplate--or ex libris--collection, these works were all found in situ inside books. These little gems are works of art themselves and give us important information about a book's ownership, purpose, and the journey each made to eventually reach the Seattle Art Museum Libraries.

Harnan was the founder of the Seattle Ceramic Society in 1940, a society dedicated to the collection of museum-worthy European porcelain,to serve as a counter to the already fine collection of Asian porcelain held by SAM. Many pieces in SAM's collection bear the credit line: "Blanche M. Harnan Ceramic Collection." She was also named an honorary curator of 18th century porcelain for the museum.

T the turn of the century, when Seattle was feeling its
first thrust of prosperity, some residents decided to
bttild very beautiful homes on Capitol Hill, one of which was
the Richard Dwight Merrill house of classic design.
One of the iew beautiful homes of that ~rn that have gone
unchanged in design and furnishings, it is among l l homes
which will be included in the Seattle Art Museum's 15th
annual exhibitic~n of residential architecture from IO a.m.
to 5 p.m. May 7. This year's tour is called "Capitol Hill
Classics."

In 1909 Charles A. Platt, Sr., of New V:ork designed the
Merrill house and garden in elegant Italian style. He alSl)
selected the furnishings from France and Italy.
Throughout the house Venetian furniture, painted and
gilded, is in keeping with damask walls, walnut paneling,
silk antique-velvet upholstery, tapestries and highly polished
parquet floors.
Also notable is a quaint tile tea table in the drawing
room. The table was purchased by the Merrills after it had

The distinctive home is included in the
Seattle Art Museum's 15th Annual Exhibition
of Residential Architecture, called "Capitol

The Woolvin Patten home is a "museum"
of exquisite and rare pieces of furnitu.re, art
objects and accessories. Many of the pieces
came from the Georgia home of Mrs. Patten's mother, who was a collector and deco·
rator.
In the gracious drawing room are four
chairs of the Louis .XVI. period that have
their original Beauvais tapestry. A quaint
melodeon, a Japanese hibachi used as an
end table, Italian sculptures, wood candelabra and gilded chairs also are to be admired.

In the formal dining room, elegant silver,
rare porcelain and stoneware and fine traditional furniture bring the beauty of past

belong. Durable~ They're made by Toastmaster and most everyone knows Toastmaster products last years longer than others.
Next time you want to give an enduring gift, give a Toastmaster

Women enjoy poking around other people's houses
and gardens, especially in strange cities. But tourists seldom have a chance to do so, unless they have
a lot of friends in the city in which they are visiting.
But during the Seattle World's Fair, the little woman from Dubuque, Iowa, will be able to see inside
some of Seattle's loveliest homes and the ardent gardener from Fort Wayne, Ind., will thrill to the masses
of the Washington State flower if they are here at
the right times in May, and visitors from some landlocked part of the country will see how Seattle's gardens grow right to the edge of the water, during July
and_August.
Not strictly for the woman visitor, of course,
but of particular interest to women will be:
The architectural tour of the Seattle Art Museum,
May 10. A total of 14 Washington Park homes (one
will show only pool and cabana) will be open that
day and tea will be served in two of them. Proceeds
benefit the museum's operating fund. (Tickets are
available now at the museum; reservations, of course,
are limited.)

Chester S. Bartholomew residence features a south deck
overlooking a wooded ravine,
and large windows facing
Puget Sound on the west.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W.

People DO like to poke around in other people's
houses—particularly do they like the elegant old
mansions. This was proved at yesterday's Architectural Tour when hundreds of women (and quite
a lot of men) queued up at 11 Capitol Hill homes
to see how other people live, long before the first
door opened at 10 o'clock—and they were still going
str mg when the doors closed at 5.
Too late to think about it this year, but what
about two days of touring next year? That way, a
tourist could see more of the things in the houses
and less of other women's heads! The flower arrangements were superb but what was particularly
fetching was an arrangement of vegetables in Mrs.
Bloedel Meadowcroft's kitchen. (By the way, older
women on the tour enjoyed the beautiful kitchensno matter how many antiques were in the other
rooms, everything was up-to-date in the culinary
departments.)
By the way, where were the house owners while
their houses were being filled with visitors and Art
Museum Guild members were directing traffic?
At the movies, perhaps? Some took the tour!

Homes to Be Part of Tour
(See Page I, this section,
for photos.)
The creative talent of the
Northwest school of architecture is evident in the 12
homes on Capitol Hill which
will be open from 10 to 7
o'clock May 5 for the 17th
:i.nnual Architectural Exhibit sponsored by the Seattle
Art Museum.

with a delightful garden. His
use of antique fixtures and
artifacts is of special interest. He, too, has a f i n e
collection of Northwest paintings and sculpture.
Mr. David Moll and Mr.
Charles Berrisford l r a n s formed a 60-year-old farm·
house into a smart city home ,
with privacy, easy main- '
lenance and charm. They
have created unusual pieces
of furniture from unlikely
sources at a minimum cost.
Mr. D a n i e 1 Streissguth
built his home in 1961, using
unfinished cedar shingles for
the exterior, stock doors and
double - hung windows to
blend with the old houses in
the Broadway East neighborhood. The main-floor entrance opens into a 1 u s h
conservatory. The I iv in g
room upstairs opens onto a
view deck. Oriental rugs
and an )830 French marblelopped stove are among the
antique furnishings.
Mr. Jack Alger lives on
the top floor of a three-story
building, constructed in 1955,
across the street from Mr.
Streissguth, The view from
the apartment is panoramic.
The apartment provides !iv- f

paintings and sculpture.
IlIE BACHELOR occupants of seven of the t o u r
homes have exhibited good
taste, imagination and sophisitication in both design
and decor.
Each of the family homes
on the tour has its interesting feature, with emphasis
on antique furnishings.
Mrs. John Baillargeon's
traditional house, remodeled
in 1959, provides an excellent setting for her collection of French furniture,
porcelain and other art objects.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert J.
Rreskovich's Colonial house
has an enclosed garden with
<t brick patio. The decorative
moldings in the kitchen are
of special interest.
