Description

35mm color slide of a wine bottle cooler (Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory). It has a white ground, accentuated by a stripe of dark blue near the rim. Burnished gilding accentuates both the rim and the molding of the scroll-shaped handles. Gilt foliage frames the oval medallion that depicts a putto in a cloud, holding a garland of flowers. Additional garlands and baskets of flowers adorn the body of the cooler, as do the large initials DB, formed from undulating branches and flower garlands. This object was part of a service associated with Mme. Du Barry, mistress of Louis XV (Fritzsche 2018). The number 47 is handwritten on the slide.
