During the past two years the Northwest Artists Today exhibitions have focused on particular media for each series: Works on
Paper, Part I; Painting and Sculpture, Part II; and Glass and
Fiber, Part Ill. The 1977 invitational brings together a variety of
media as well as styles. Reflecting national trends, there is an
emphasis on photography and drawing, both now recognized as
major and independent mediums with distinctive expressive and
technical possibilities of their own. Print-makers are both manipulating traditional means and exploring new processes such as
xerox. Even the scale of works on paper has approached that of
painting. In painting there is a continuation with formal concerns of
color and process and varying degrees of realism. In sculpture the
interest in different materials, such as steel or wrapped bamboo,
parallels the individual interest in formalism and/or content. As on
the national scene, there is no singular direction in the visual arts;
however, there is a strong movement in the interaction of the visual
and performing arts as represented in several works in the exhibition.
The purpose of this exhibition is to demonstrate the wide spectrum
of artists' activities in the area. Through the support of the Pacific
Northwest Arts Council of the Seattle Art Museum we hope to
continue to bring to the museum visitor current work of both established and relatively new artists of the Northwest.

<text>THE ARTIST ll THE CITY, C.E.T.A.
N

This project was made possible in part by funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, Washington, D.C.

The Seattle Art Museum welcomes the opportunity to present
to the community the artistic products of the innovative
program developed so imaginatively by the Seattle Arts
Commission. This exemplary use of C.E.T.A. funds, which
made possible the employment of artists by the City, has
resulted in enriching Seattle's collection of art. What is being
introduced here will continue to bring pleasure to the people
of Seattle.
Willis F. Woods
Director, Seattle Art Museum

Admitting that artists are also hard-hit in times of high unemployment was a small but important step for government
to take. The artists in this program have worked hard for the
City, and the City and the artists have benefited.
Wes Uhlman
Mayor, City of Seattle
I am pleased to have shared in the decision by the Mayor and
City Council of Seattle to utilize funds made available by the
Comprehensive Employment and Training Act to support a
variety of art projects in the City. The C.E.T.A. project has
proven to be one of the innovative and successful programs
in the nation. It has resulted in artistic contributions to the city
that shall remain for future generations to share and enjoy. It
is not only a fitting project for the City of Seattle, but also a fine
tribute to our nation's Bicentennial.
Bruce Chapman
Secretary of State, State of Washington
The City has a critical commitment to assist in sustaining the
lives of its cultural institutions: you cannot in these times have
an art museum, a symphony orchestra, or an experimental
theater without municipal, state, and federal support.
However, the C.E.T.A. program was the Arts Commission's
way of recognizing the fact that neither can you have an art
museum without painters, a symphony orchestra without
composers, or an experimental theater without playwrights.
Norm Hoagy
Chairperson, Seattle Arts Commission

The C.E.T.A. project was a daring and innovative program.
The Seattle Arts Commission was breaking ground, and all
the people connected with the project are to be complimented for making it work, because there were simply no
rules to follow.
Morris J. Alhadeff
Former Chairperson, Seattle Arts Commission

This is the kind of thing the City has to do. C.E.T.A. funds
were an opportunity to do something that everybody wanted
to do. Periodically, the City finds itself in a place where it can
go in one of several directions; it has to recognize the moment and react quickly and positively. This project wasn't one
where people covered themselves. The Arts Commission
the Department of Personnel, everybody involved took ~
chance. I think it paid off.
Paul Schell
Director of Community Development, City of Seattle

The C.E.T.A. artists funded through the King-Snohomish
Manpower Consortium proved that a five-month publicly
supported arts program could leave a legacy that would
benefit citizens of all ages for years to come. The Seattle
program created jobs and met a public need. It benefited both
artists and residents, the latter being the greater of the two
beneficiaries. Seattle is indeed richer for having contributed
to the support of its artists-in-residence.
Robert McPherson
Director, King-Snohomish Manpower Consortium

I am pleased to have been a part of such a unique and
innovative project. The works of art that were created will be a
lasting tribute that can be enjoyed by all.
John J. Driscoll
Personnel Director/Secretary and Chief Examiner,
City of Seattle

As Neighborhood Artist in Residence in the West Woodland area of Seattle, Adkison
acted as catalyst in the implementation of four community projects which continue
beyond C.E.T.A. support: an arts activity center; preliminary designs for two
neighborhood murals, one at the Norse Retirement Home, 5311 Phinney North, and
one for the retaining wall on Market Street, north of 50th; a long range plan for street
related projects in cooperation with the Office of Neighborhood Planning and the

legend of a city in the sky, the surrealistic landscape mural, which incorporates
features of the building into its design, is a polychrome bas relief of ferro cement with

twenty-five works capturing area residents and diverse life-styles, six were chosen

This is Part II of an ongoing series of invitational exhibitions
exploring art today in the Northwest. In this exhibition, as in Part I:
Works on Paper, it should be noted that the focus is on the most
current work of the artist, even though that artist is well known in the
community. Also included are artists relatively new to the art scene
whose present work is of interest. As on the national scene, instead
of one singular direction, there is a healthy proliferation in varying
degrees of realism and abstraction, including an emphasis on
minimal esthetics, concept, and concern with process.
In the short time that I have been in Seattle, I have visited many
exhibitions, collections and studios in my attempt to explore what is
happening now in the area. I have also asked for references and
have had many unsolicited inquiries. There are also artists in the
community whom we unfortunately have not yet had an opportunity
to approach or fully explore. But, we hope through this continuing
series of exhibitions to bring forward to the Museum visitors a
spectrum of artists' activities in the area.
I would like to acknowledge the support of the Pacific Northwest
Arts Council of the Seattle Art Museum for their assistance in
presenting this exhibition.

                    <text>nORTHWE/T ART TODAY- PART I
Seattle Art mu1eum - Vol.Pork
September 19-0ctober 12 1975

When I first arrived in Seattle and examined the recent history
of the Northwest Annual , I was disturbed to find that many of
the well-known artists in the community did not enter the
Annual; and if an artist entered the competition he was
judged solely on one work. Perhaps, it is time for a more comprehensive survey of what is happening now in the community. Therefore, a series of invitational shows called
Northwest Artists Today has been organized. Works on Paper
is part one of this on-going series.
The major prerequisites for this exhibition were that the
artist's works be on paper and that only current works be
exhibited. In cooperation with the aims of Capitol Hill Arts
on Show a second consideration was the artist be associated
with Seattle. In the exhibition you will find artists well-known
in the community whose work the public normally does not
associate with paper. Also, photographers are often overlooked in this category. Even one's associations with paper
works will change because of the new qualities of scale,
plasticity, texture, media and innovations of traditional media
on paper.
