Although the museum officially began in 1933, some reports note a longer period of existence -- the 1932/33 report, for example, is subtitled "Twenty-seventh Year." Prior to becoming the Seattle Art Museum, two predecessor organizations existed: the Seattle Fine Arts Society (1905-1917) and then, after merging with the Washington Arts Association (1906-1917), the Art Institute of Seattle (1917-1932).</p>
