La Cité des Animaux
Animals In Art
Artists' Books--Washington (State)--Mercer Island
This is an original collaged book opening up to reveal a parade of strange, whimsical animals creeping through a deserted white city. Skordal expertly creates juxapositions using scissor-and-paper collage to provoke the viewer. It harkens to a hidden city described within Italo Calvino's, "Invisible Cities": where forgotten fauna were coming back, "leaping from the capitals and drainpipes...resuming possession of their city." (160). The animal images are reproduced from A. Seba's 'Naturalium Thesauri,' published in 1731 as well as other antique works. Locket on front cover opens to reveal 3D collage.

Oneida Indians
Oneida Language
Creating a textual and audio artists' book, this work honors the role of Oneida language in cultural identity. The Oneida language is in danger of dying out, and due to blood laws the artist's son will not be eligible for tribal membership. To connect herself and her son with Native culture, Mickelson used an audio recording from the WPA Oneida Language Revitalization Program. The recording is in Oneida and includes English translation.
Colophon reads: Lotestó slote / He Wears a Feather was told by Jefferson Baird, a member of the Oneida tribe of Wisconsin to Dennison Hill in the late 1930s. It was read by Amos Christjohn and recorded in the 1980s. The text was collected as part of the WPA Oneida Language Revitalization Program. Today, the Oneida Nation is working to preserve the dying language. As a member of the Oneida Nation. I hope to help the language be seen, heard, studied, and learned--I also hope to strengthen the connection to this part of my heritage by working with the language in this way.

Terrain: Plateau Native Art & Poetry
Indians Of North America--Columbia Plateau--Art
Indians Of North America--Columbia Plateau--Poetry
Art--Poetry
Artists' Books--Washington (State)--Specimens
Terrain speaks of the textures of the earth. This compilation of expressions, relief prints and poems, breathes the life of ongoing cultures inherent to place. The project was an opportunity to bring people together: older artists working alongside younger artists; well-known artists working alongside emerging ones. It became a very multigenerational experience. Editions were produced for museums, the artists, and people who volunteered on the project. This collaboration used the same printing techniques and materials for each poem and image. This project shed some light on artists of the Plateau area, who don’t often receive the attention that artists from the Northwest Coast and Plains regions receive. The homeland of the Plateau people is defined by the crest of the Cascades to the Continental Divide, touching northern California extending far north into British Columbia.
Inscription: Signed by editor and curator on colophon in pencil and hand numbered below.
Colophon reads: Terrain editioned at the Evergreen State College used Vandercook presses to print original relief prints on Domestic Etching paper with the folio made of Arches Cover embellished with mono-prints by Corwin Clairmont. The text was printed with a hp LaserJet 1012. Copyrights are held by individual artists & writers ... 68 - Each artist and poet received two books; 15 donations to museums, 1 - Printer's Proof; 1 - Editor's Proof; 5 - books for volunteers; 2 - books reserved for Longhouse Gifts; Total books - 92.

Swimming In Art
Each spread contains a separate poem describing the author's dreams and thoughts while swimming in a unique water landscape (river, ocean, bath house). Unlike her title, A Diver Does not Abandon, the accordion structure of this work does not facilitate the text and images floating across the pages. Instead, the layers of paper provide weight to her edge-to-edge, watery imagery.
