La Cité des Animaux

Subject

Animals In Art
Artists' Books--Washington (State)--Mercer Island

Description

This is an original collaged book opening up to reveal a parade of strange, whimsical animals creeping through a deserted white city. Skordal expertly creates juxapositions using scissor-and-paper collage to provoke the viewer. It harkens to a hidden city described within Italo Calvino's, "Invisible Cities": where forgotten fauna were coming back, "leaping from the capitals and drainpipes...resuming possession of their city." (160). The animal images are reproduced from A. Seba's 'Naturalium Thesauri,' published in 1731 as well as other antique works. Locket on front cover opens to reveal 3D collage.
