Description
35mm color slide of a yellow mustard-pot tray (Vincennes Porcelain Manufactory). It has scalloped, gilded edges and three white reserves, 2 oval on the sides, and 1 circular in the middle (for the mustard pot), all with gilt trim. The blue birds, branches, and flowers in the reserves are painted in a style called en camaïeu bleu (monochrome blue; a technique of painting with tints of a single color). Yellow was rarely used as a ground color, first appearing in 1753 (Eriksen and De Bellaigue 1987, 51). Roth and Le Corbeiller note that mustard trays with accompanying mustard pots were first produced at Vincennes beginning in about 1752. Vincennes mustard pots tended to be shaped like barrels in an evocation of the medieval tradition of storing mustard in small barrels (2000, 269). The number 14 is handwritten on the slide.
