Description

35mm color slide of an octagonal tea canister (Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory). The dark blue ground color is known as gros bleu (full blue), alternatively termed bleu du roi (the king’s blue). A painted reserve on each side of the canister contains pastoral subjects. The reserve and the sides of the box are edged with a thick band of tooled gilding. The top of the canister is gilded with scrolls, foliage, and a latticework pattern (also known as a “diaper pattern,” which refers to latticework or trelliswork applied over a ground color; see Savill 1988, 3:1173). The reserve visible in this slide depicts a scene with a young peasant woman and a child. The number 35 is handwritten on the slide.
