States: "Ex Libris / Confido in Deo [Trust in God]/Manson Franklin Backus"; depicts coat of arms with 3 doves and a chevron. Personal bookplate of Manson Franklin Backus (1853-1935). He was a Seattle banker and philanthropist. He co-organized the Washington National Bank of Seattle in 1899, becoming its president in 1900. He supported the Fine Arts Society, a predecessor to the Seattle Art Museum. Upon his death in 1935, his estate bequeathed more than 300 prints to the Seattle Art Museum, and a library of more than 160 volumes on prints and printmaking to the Seattle Art Museum's Library.
